Biltmore Elementary School's new gardening program was selected from schools around the nation for the Junior Master Gardener (JMG) "Treat of the Month" award. The school received $25 to go towards a JMG book for the student gardeners.
Steve Mendenhall, a teacher and lead gardener at Biltmore Elementary, has helped the students to take an interest in planting and flowering to build a greener world. The school's JMG student-leaders include India H., Jannoris R. and Jasmine B.
Biltmore is one of a select few Duval County schools with the JMG program. As part of the program, students work diligently in various areas including math, science and language arts, in addition to their gardening efforts.
The school's new garden has received the final touches with raised beds and a timer for watering. Students are ready to dig in and watch their vegetables grow.
