Mayor Alvin Brown held a press conference recently at
Englewood High School to make a special announcement. In front of students, parents, administrators and city officials, Mayor Brown announced that the JROTC programs throughout the district would not be eliminated this coming school year.
Mayor Brown was able to help raise the funds needed to save these programs with the assistance of dedicated individuals and organizations who did not want to see these programs disappear from our schools.
Mayor Brown was joined at the press conference by Superintendent Pratt-Dannals, School Board members, Congressman Ander Crenshaw, Representative Mia Jones and Jacksonville’s Education Commissioner, Dr. Donnie Horner.
JROTC students from Englewood High school also attended the press conference, dressed in uniform, and demonstrated their leadership skills in conducting the ceremonial pledge of allegiance.
The mayor expressed his view on the JROTC program and how he felt it was imperative to keep this program in our schools as Jacksonville is a military-friendly city. He believes training young individuals with the knowledge and skills that are provided in the JROTC program is essential to maintaining the city’s growing success.
