Duval County Public Schools Receive Golden and Silver Awards

Congratulations to all Duval County Public Schools that received a Golden or Silver Award for the 2010-11 school year. These awards are given annually by the Florida Department of Education to schools that have met certain criteria for volunteerism.

The Golden School Award recognizes public schools with exemplary volunteer programs. A Golden School must meet the following criteria:

  • A staff training program on volunteerism in which a minimum of 80% of the school staff have participated during the school year.
  • A School Volunteer Coordinator who has been designated to provide leadership for the school volunteer program through recruitment, placement, training and supervision of participants.
  • A total number of hours in volunteer service that equals twice the number of students enrolled in the school. These hours of volunteer service will be in the areas that support instruction.

This year we had 99 schools in Duval County receive the Golden Award. We are very proud of these schools for their dedication to promoting volunteerism and setting good examples for their students to give back to others. To view the list of winners, click here.

The Silver School Award recognizes secondary schools whose students provide exemplary volunteer services to elementary and secondary schools. The award is presented to the schools that meet the following criteria:

  • The sending school must have a school volunteer coordinator who will provide coordination of the program, placement of students, orientation and training for the students, and student and program evaluation.
  • The receiving school must have a volunteer coordinator who will provide coordination of the program, assist in the placement of the secondary students, provide orientation and training for the receiving staff, and assist in providing for student and program evaluation.
  • Student volunteers and the receiving faculty must both receive orientation and training. Student volunteers must receive continuous supervision.
  • The composite student volunteer hours must equal at least one half the total number of students in the sending school.

Duval County had 10 schools that received this award. To see the list of winners, click here. We encourage all of our schools to keep up the hard work in devoting time and energy to helping others both in our schools and in the community.
