Biltmore Elementary Gives Tips to Parents at ‘Second Cup of Coffee’ Monthly Meeting

Biltmore Elementary School invited parents and guardians to engage in the ‘Second Cup of Coffee’ parent education session on October 11. Nikki Torian, Biltmore’s math coach, centered the meeting around common core standards with a concentration on mathematics for kindergarten parents and guardians.

Ms. Torian provided practical methods for parents to bring the classroom home for students. Parents are encouraged to ask students to recognize shapes around the house and while traveling.

Math recommendations include questions such as, ‘count the number of objects in a set’ and ‘compare tall to short and big to little.’ By asking engaging questions, parents will promote creative thinking with students. Other practices consist of counting to 100, writing out numbers and pointing to specific numbers.

All parents are invited to attend the ‘Second Cup of Coffee’ meetings to stay involved and interactive with their students’ studies. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month and provide different tips at each meeting. For more information, contact Nikki Torian.
