A. Philip Randolph Students Honor the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department

A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology students spoke at the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department’s (JFRD) Fire Prevention Week kick-off on October 10.

Patrick G. was the first A. Philip Randolph student to speak in recognition of JFRD. Patrick referenced a JFRD retiree who attracted him to the fire service. Another Randolph student, Soyla, followed Patrick with her thoughts on why firefighters are daily heroes.

The students met with State Representative Mia Jones, who read the fire prevention week proclamation. JFRD Director and Fire Chief Dr. Charles E. Moreland announced a new community outreach program to educate residents about home fire safety.

“We want to encourage more of our citizens to assess their risk to residential fire hazards and to think in terms of fire prevention,” said Dr. Moreland. “Through our new Residential Fire Safety Canvassing Program, we will share how some simple precautions can help save lives.”

Following the Fire Prevention Week kick-off, Patrick, Soyla and the other A. Philip Randolph students toured the 9-1-1 center with JFRD staff.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls.
