Duval County Public Schools’ Department of World Languages Celebrates Chinese Language, Culture and Cuisine

The Department of World Languages for Duval County Public Schools presented the Chinese Celebration of Language and Culture in September at the Haskell Building.

Administrators opened the event with a PowerPoint presentation highlighting a projected student exchange trip to China by University of Florida professor of Chinese studies, Dr. Elinore Fresh. DCPS’ Chinese teacher Yan Li and her husband, Bill Gramarcy, commemorated Chinese history and culture and China’s geography.

Guests included more than 140 DCPS’ students who are currently studying Chinese, their parents and professors from the University of North Florida. Guests enjoyed a gourmet Chinese dinner while the evening entertainment commenced.

Amy S., a student at James Weldon Johnson, performed a solo piece on her violin. Master Joel Timmons, international champion and member of the United States national kung fu team, demonstrated his skills in Chinese martial arts. The evening concluded with a routine by the Jacksonville Chinese Association Dancers.

Thanks to the sponsors, Jacksonville Sister Cities Association and the Asia Society of the University of North Florida, and to all who planned, promoted and attended this celebration of Chinese language, culture and cuisine.
