Students at Alden Road Exceptional Student Center have extended their recycling efforts to include a product most wouldn’t think about: crayons.
Over the past year, students have taken steps to recycle used crayons into new, artistically shaped versions of crayons to be shown at conferences, festivals and on school campus. The project addresses diverse academic areas and provides students with the opportunity to practice and reinforce vocational skills.
The artful crayons will be displayed by students at the 65th annual Florida CEC State Conference at Crown Plaza Hotel on Thursday, October 20, 2011.
The crayons have previously been displayed at the Tools for Success parents’ conference and the Cummer Museum’s Very Special Arts Festival. The underlying principle for this project is to recycle crayons, which are made with paraffin wax. If crayons are discarded and sent to a landfill, years pass before they are decomposed. The project teaches a valuable skill set to the students.
