New Berlin Elementary Students Face ‘Elepha-normus Reading Challenge’

Students at New Berlin Elementary are excited to meet their reading goal this year, thanks to a clever idea from the school’s business partner, The Jacksonville Zoo.

The Jacksonville Zoo offered a challenge to students that if students meet their reading goal of one million words this school year, Principal Wanda Reese will clean the elephant barn at the zoo.

The class that reads the most, along with the top readers in each grade level, will be invited to a behind-the-scenes view of the clean-up. The teacher from the winning class will also help Principal Reese clean the barn.

The annual million word reading campaign unites the school around reading and Read It Forward Jax!. Students read and log books at their independent level. For students in third-, fourth- and fifth-grades, one million words would be equivalent to reading 30 chapter books each year. For students in kindergarten, first- and second-grades, one million words is equivalent to reading or listening to four books each day.

Good luck New Berlin Elementary students!
