Well-known author, Jane Wood, visited students in
Sheffield Elementary’s extended day program to promote reading comprehension and discuss her third book,
Ghosts on the Coast.
Sheffield’s extended day program strives to increase reading comprehension by offering an Author Book Club for students in third- through fifth-grade. Prior to meeting Jane Wood, the students participated in shared reading activities with extended day teachers each week. Vocabulary and comprehension questions were included in the shared readings.
After completing a week of reading preparation, the students were ready to meet with Jane Wood. Mrs. Wood gave the students an opportunity to step inside an author’s head and learn where her ideas come from. She explained how characters are developed, why certain events happen and how settings are chosen. Mrs. Wood took the students through an interactive PowerPoint presentation, showing the real scenes from
Ghosts on the Coast.
The Author Book Club is a five-week program that is in its second year at Sheffield. By the end of the five weeks, students will have completed hands-on activities about
Ghosts on the Coast and the city of Savannah, GA.
