New Berlin Elementary hosted All Star Family Learning Night, an annual event that ties in each fall with the school’s theme of the year. The 2011-2012 theme is “TEAM New Berlin: Together Everyone Achieves More.” The event included sports related learning activities that stressed teamwork.
The night’s focus on reading, science and math activities included the creation of bookmarks representing Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals’ Super 6 Reading Strategies. Students also created salt volcanoes and participated in math games.
Each classroom decorated a literacy pumpkin to represent their favorite book or character. The event attendees voted for the top three pumpkins to win a fall treat party.
The winners were:
• First place – Ms. Meide, Ms. Matson and Ms. Harbison, Charlotte’s Web
• Second place, tie – Ms. Page, George’s Marvelous Medicine
• Second place, tie – Ms. White, On Halloween Night
New Berlin welcomed special guests, Maggie the Reading Dog from the Pawsitive Pets Reading Program, South Paw from the Jacksonville Suns and the school mascot, Champ the Bear. Safety patrols sold refreshments, and raised $546 for their end-of-year trip to Washington D.C. The Teachers of Tomorrow (TOTS) raised $225 from their bake sale to help with their end-of-year trip to Sea World Orlando.
