The talk of college was widespread at
A. Philip Randolph during Jacksonville Goes to College Week. The guidance office teamed up with the Gentlemen of Randolph (GOR) to rally students in preparation for the week’s activities.
Monday began with a lunch room rally, which highlighted registration days for the ACT, SAT and the Jacksonville National College Fair. GOR members distributed flyers for the College Board sponsored website,
www.YCG.org. The website emphasizes that “You Can Go to College,” with student testimonies.
The excitement continued on Tuesday with the spotlight on Acceleration Programs and the Career Academies offered at Randolph. The lunch room was decorated with posters showing offered honors and advanced placement courses at the school.
On Wednesday, the PSAT/NMSQT was administered to all sophomores at the state’s expense and to juniors seeking to practice the SAT and qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. Randolph tested
197 students – 165 sophomores and 32 juniors.
The English language arts teachers presented information on college admissions and scholarship essay writing in a segment called College Basics 101 during each English class on Thursday.
The college hype culminated on Friday with Represent Your College Day. Students, teachers and staff sported their college colors. Marketa Teal, a representative from the University of South Florida at St. Petersburg, presented to members of the senior class. Marketa joined students and teachers for a photo opportunity amidst college pennants and a Jacksonville Goes to College Week banner donated by Todd Helfer, manager of FASTSIGNS on St. Johns Bluff Road.
