Mayport Middle Students Video Conference with the JOIDES Research Vessel
The archaeology class at
Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School had the opportunity to video conference with researchers about the JOIDES vessel. Students learned about many aspects of archaeology, focusing on the ship’s ocean soil sampling which has led to many insights into the paleoclimate record.
JOIDES’ researchers discussed how the paleoclimate data has affected the earth’s climate and its inhabitants’ lifestyles. Students were able to view the JOIDES’ research findings during the video conference.
Mayport Middle’s students took an interest in the day-to-day lives of the researchers aboard the ship. JOIDES is funded by the National Science Foundation and has no homeport. The ship is the only one of its kind in the United States. It is run by the U.S. Implementing Organization, which is an association for Ocean Leadership from Texas A&M University and Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory from Columbia University.
