Several students from
Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology toured the shipyards at BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards and learned about various career opportunities on Tuesday, December 13 and Wednesday, December 14, 2011.
Before touring the 24-hours a day, 365 days a year operation, students watched a safety video then met the vice president and general manager. The human resources manager also presented information about career opportunities.
The organization plans to launch a welding program and an automation production technology curriculum for students in 2012.
During the tour, students took part in the following activities:
• saw the fabrication and production line where steel was being cut, shaped and welded;
• practiced welding using a virtual welding simulator;
• toured the machine shop;
• saw a demonstration of tools used by craftsmen; and
• visited the dry dock and railways.
The tour ended with a question and answer session and positive feedback from students and teachers.
