New Berlin Students Join "The League of Extraordinary Readers"

New Berlin Elementary kicked off their school-wide reading campaign at the beginning of September. Students from all grade levels came dressed in their favorite superhero costume. Teachers and the school mascot, CHAMP the bear, also participated.

Students were encouraged to join "The League of Extraordinary Readers" by meeting the goal of reading one million words during the school year. Each student was asked to sign a pledge with their parents indicating they would join the reading league by meeting their quarterly grade level goal. Students pledged to read 20 to 30 minutes nightly and record their minutes on their book log. Students who meet their goal for the first nine weeks will receive a New Berlin Super Learner dog tag and then be able to earn paw print charms to add to their dog tag quarterly.

The reading goals at each grade level are as follows:

  • Kindergarten: 45 books each nine weeks
  • First-grade: 65 books each nine weeks
  • Second-grade: 90 books each nine weeks
  • Third-grade: seven chapter books each nine weeks
  • Fourth-grade:
    • first nine weeks - seven chapter books
    • second nine weeks - seven books
    • third nine weeks - six books
    • fourth nine weeks - five books
  • Fifth-grade:
    • first nine weeks - seven books
    • second nine weeks - seven books
    • third nine weeks - six books
    • fourth nine weeks - five books

Students who meet the reading challenge will be invited to the Reading Celebration that will be held at the end of the school year. Good luck readers! Nothing can stop New Berlin super learners.
