Landon Students Visit Driftwood Educational Center
Article submitted by David Cook, Assistant Principal at Julia Landon College Preparatory
One hundred seventh-grade students at Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School spent three days and two nights in St. Simons, GA at the Driftwood Educational Center. With their bags packed holding special items to survive three days away from home, students stayed in cabins with their classmates on the Driftwood site.
The students were immersed in learning activities related to science and life skills led by Driftwood counselors. From learning how to track through the woods, to managing a budget, to building a spaceship, the students practiced team-building and demonstrated leadership skills.
Students spent their time in well-designed classes including Muck, Snails and Rails, Gator Tales, Merely Plankton, Trackers, Turbid Waters, Feather Physics and Buddy Squad. The curriculum of each class allowed students to observe, collect and analyze information with hands-on activities and real-world tasks. Muck, Snails and Rails was the favorite class for the students. In this class, the students learned about marshes and various species that inhabit marshlands. Muddy from head to toe, students became an element of the marsh habitat!
Got Ink? Squids do! An evening class at Driftwood took students on an adventure of dissecting squids. Julia Landon students examined this invertebrate, dissecting it piece by piece. The Driftwood counselors showed students how poking, probing and discussing are important characteristics of learning science.
Exhausted after three days of active learning, the students from Julia Landon returned home with a better understanding of science. Their experience at Driftwood allowed them to build collaborative relationships with their classmates. The skills they learned and demonstrated on the trip are essential for becoming effective leaders both inside and outside the classroom.
