Strategic Partner of the Month
During the November meeting of the Duval County School Board, Superintendent Pratt-Dannals and Board members recognized Comcast, HandsOn Jacksonville, The Jacksonville Fraternal Order of Police and the American Heart Association for their support of and contributions to Duval County Public Schools.
Comcast was recognized for their financial and in-kind contributions to the Teacher Supply Depot.
This past summer, 215 Comcast employees volunteered more than 1,700 hours in one day, and donated $1,000 worth of school supplies and money to the Teacher Supply Depot. This was the largest volunteer group to ever help out at the depot.
In addition to allowing their employees to volunteer, the Comcast Foundation provided the Depot with nearly $7,000 to go towards the purchase of supplies for Duval County teachers to use in their classrooms.
HandsOn Jacksonville was honored for their annual “Visit from St. Nicholas” event which promotes literacy while providing gifts for the holiday season to students attending Duval County elementary turnaround schools.
Last year, HandsOn Jacksonville, with more than 1,000 volunteers, delivered 27,000 books and 48,000 toys to approximately 9,000 students in 18 Duval County elementary schools. The value of the 2008 St. Nicholas goods and services infused more than $487,000 into the hands of our students; of that total figure the value of the 3,182 volunteer hours from supporters was in excess of $62,000.
The Jacksonville Fraternal Order of Police and the American Heart Association was recognized for their donation of 36 automated external defibrillators (AED) to Duval County middle and high schools.
Through fundraising efforts spearheaded by Nelson Cuba, President of the Jacksonville Fraternal Order of Police, the Jacksonville community donated more than $42,000, which allowed President Cuba and the local American Heart Association to purchase 36 AEDs.
