VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS
Volunteers can enrich and shape the future of the First Coast community by sharing their time, talents, and experiences with students. Through activities such as tutoring, assisting in classrooms, mentoring, and simply the sharing of ideas, experiences and hobbies, school volunteers can impact a student's life.
Duval County Public Schools gladly welcomes your participation as a school volunteer in preparing students for successful futures. Call the school of your choice to discuss volunteer opportunities. You may also call Community Involvement at (904) 390-2960 for more information.
Tips for working with students
- The following suggestions are tips volunteers find helpful to make time spent with students enjoyable and productive.
- A student's name is very important. Make sure you pronounce the student's name the way he or she wants it pronounced.
- Show that you are interested in the student as a person. Listen carefully to what the student has to say. By your words and actions, let the student know you care.
- Students make mistakes. Let them know that making mistakes is part of learning. Do not be afraid of making mistakes yourself.
- Build the student's self-esteem. Praise your student's good behavior frequently. Keep in mind that attentiveness and effort will determine performance.
Keep the progress and behavior of each student a confidential matter between you and the student's teacher.
