Successful school volunteer and business partners programs have a designated Volunteer Coordinator whose role is to help parents, community members and business people feel welcome to your school environment.  It doesn’t take much to make a great impression—a smile, clear expectations and an engaging activity are usually all it takes.  The Department of Community and Family Engagement (CFE) employees are here to help you and your volunteers. Thank you for being an ambassador for DCPS.

Volunteer Forms, Manuals and Other Important Information

In order to decrease the turn-around time for the background screening process, please encourage your volunteers to apply for their volunteer clearance via the easy on-line process.

Successful volunteer programs have a plan for the best use of their volunteers’ time.  Below is a form that schools may choose to use to help determine the best volunteer activities with the best volunteers.

Policies are in place to keep children safe however, there are times when volunteers may not have received their cards in time for an event or have lost them.  We want to be as friendly and welcoming as possible for our volunteers.  During these times, with your Principal’s permission, you have two options:  First, if your volunteer is sure the he or she has submitted an application but has not received the volunteer card, please call our office at 390-2960 for our background screeners to check our system for a cleared screening and give you a verbal OK.  If the volunteer has not applied and there is a reasonable time before the volunteering event, please ask them to go online and if possible let them use a school computer to do so; Secondly, if the volunteering event is time-sensitive, then with the Principal’s permission, you may go to the below link and check the person against the sexual predator list.

6 Easy Steps to use the Sexual Offender Database Online:

  1. Go to www.fdle.state.fl.us

  2. Look for SYSTEMS on the left-hand side of page

  3. Click on Sexual Offender Database link

  4. Click red box titled Offender Search

  5. Click blue box titled Offender Search, then standard button

  6. Enter first and last name

The best scenario for all involved is to provide your parents and interested community members with the steps to- be background screened and encourage them to take these steps allowing as much time as possible before the date they wish to volunteer (two weeks is a good guideline).

Teachers know when field trips are planned, encourage them to remind their parents to have their volunteer cards handy or complete the volunteer background screening well in advance.
