  • Personal Planning.
To us, each student is unique with both needs and capabilities all his or her own. That's why we develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for every ESE student. These may be reviewed and updated at any time and are used to report student progress as well as to describe accommodations or modifications required to meet a standard or goal.

  • Progress.
Student progress is also reported every nine weeks with a report card. Many schools provide additional student-progress reports at three-week intervals.

In addition, we offer a wide range of tests to measure progress, including the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test and others. We also administer assessments designed specifically to measure the progress of students with disabilities.

Promotion to higher grades is governed by clearly stated standards set forth in the Pupil Progression Plan of Duval County Public Schools.

  • Accreditation.
As part of Duval County Public Schools, ESE is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Most ESE programs are offered in traditional school facilities, which are visited regularly by the Association to make sure all standards are met.

All of our schools, programs and support services are also required to participate in regular audits and program-compliance reviews conducted by state and federal regulatory agencies. These measures assure you that ESE lives up to the highest standards of accreditation.

  • Curriculum.
Duval County Public Schools offers a curriculum that prepares students to meet the standards required by the State of Florida. We make accommodations as necessary for any students who have difficulty meeting these standards. Of course, our curriculum also includes teaching the life and vocational skills most appropriate and suitable for our students.

  • Conduct.
Duval County Public Schools provides students with a written Code of Student Conduct. This document applies to all students and details behavioral expectations, discipline processes, and philosophy. It is the basis for maintaining safe and secure schools throughout the county.

Of course, procedural safeguards for ESE students with disabilities are included in the Code and are always considered in the discipline process.

Similarly, ESE follows the Duval County Public Schools attendance policy, which specifies expectations for participation and student progress. This policy considers individual circumstances and allows for legitimate student absences.
