frequently asked questions - post secondary education

Q: What are the post secondary education options?
A: If the student would like to continue his or her education after high school, there are a many options. Students are encouraged to work closely with their ese teachers and school guidance counselors to discuss the options available to them and the kinds of support and accommodations each option may offer students with disabilities. Below is a brief description of post secondary education options.

Vocational/Technical Schools
Vocational/Technical schools train adult students in a trade (such as plumbing or computer). The admission requirements and length of time to complete each program are different from program to program. Students who plan to attend a vocational/technical school should know these facts:
  • Some vocational/technical schools require a standard diploma for admission.
  • Students may be required to take a test of basic skills to show that they have the academic skills needed to benefit from the vocational/technical training.

Community Colleges

Community Colleges offer programs leading to two-year degrees. They may also offer vocational programs. The State of Florida sets minimum admission requirements for community colleges.

For programs leading to two-year degrees (A.A. or A.S.), the following requirements usually apply:

  • Students who leave high school with standard diplomas are eligible for acceptance into community colleges. Students with diplomas earned by passing the GED test are also accepted.
  • Students with special diplomas or certificates of completion are not generally eligible for admission to community colleges. However, they may be allowed to take up to 12 credit hours on a trial basis as "non-degree seeking students" while working to pass the GED test.

For vocational/technical programs within community colleges, the following requirements usually apply:

  • Students may or may not need a standard high school diploma for admission. This depends upon the technical program.
  • Students may be required to take a test of basic skills to show they have the academic skills needed to benefit from the vocational/technical training.
