Even the most successful student occasionally needs help with study skills. Did you know that only one out of three college freshman will eventually graduate from college? These students were ALL successful in high school. So what happened?
They got to a point in their lives where what they had been doing to be successful in school was no longer working --- and they didn’t change! Is what you are doing working? Probably not or you wouldn’t have clicked on study skills.
The resources that follow allow you to improve your study skills: speed reading, concentration, comprehension, memorizing, note-taking, and analysis of material. Don’t just scroll through the options. Learn them and, more importantly, use them!
Don't write off a career just because you can’t read or study well. Make a plan:
- Set your goal for improving your study skills.
[On the last test, you didn’t know what they test was going to cover. Maybe you need to improve your note-taking and organizational skills.]
- Use the Internet sites to learn how to improve.
[Look for sites that work on note-taking and organizational skills. Maybe you already do a great job of memorizing terms so DON’T WASTE TIME ON THAT.]
- Develop a positive outlook.
[“Don't write yourself a negative script.” If you are constantly saying, “I can’t do that, or I’ll never pass that test” then chances are it will all come true.]
- Reward yourself for your success and don’t kick yourself for your failures
[Did you forget to take home your test study guide? Did you study the wrong terms? Did you spend too much time on one question and not have time to finish the assignment? Figure out what went wrong and use that information to do better next time.]
- Develop persistence.
[Consider the proverb of the tortoise and the hare. The speed that you are traveling at is not nearly as important as your direction and your motivation to reach your goal. Persistence and determination alone are all powerful.]
