Home Education

Home Education is a parent-directed education alternative.  Home Education allows the freedom to explore and learn at the pace of the individual student.  Parents who provide instruction to their children at home are requested to read carefully and comply with all of the state statutes and regulations governing the operation of a Home Education Program.  This site contains information about the Home Education Program. The materials provided will give you the necessary information to initiate and maintain a Home Education Program for your child(ren).

In order to properly notify the superintendent of schools of their intent to establish a Home Education Program, parents are requested to complete the enclosed notification form and mail or fax it within 30 days of establishment of the program.

Florida Statute 1002.41 requires that you notify the District Superintendent of Schools in writing of your intent to initiate a Home Education Program. Upon receipt of your Letter of Intent, this office will send you a letter of notification that will provide you with documentation that your Home Education Program is registered with the state, as the law requires. Please click on the link below to download a copy of the district’s Home Education Program Guidelines and Program Procedures Packet.

The parent/guardian is responsible for maintaining a portfolio of materials and records for each registered child as well as furnishing the Superintendent of Schools with an annual educational evaluation of each child's academic progress. Any cost related to the Home Education Program or the evaluation is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Considering Home Education

Home education is defined by Florida Statute as "sequentially progressive instruction of a student directed by his or her parent in order to satisfy the attendance requirements of SS. 1002.41, 1003.01 (4), and 1003.21 (1)." The law requires that the parent meet one of the following conditions:

  1. The parent must hold a valid regular Florida certificate in the subjects or grades to be taught and complies with any other requirements prescribed by law, or
  2. The parent does not hold a valid regular certificate to teach but complies with the following requirements:
    1. Notifies the superintendent of schools of the county in which the parent resides of his or her intent to establish a home education program.
    2. Maintains a portfolio of records and materials.
    3. Provides an annual educational evaluation.

Terminating a Home Education Program

To close your home education program you must submit a letter of termination to the home education office.  The letter of termination must include the child’s legal name, the date of termination and your signature. Termination letters may be mailed to the Home Education Office, Duval County Public Schools, 1701 Prudential Drive, Jacksonville, Florida 32207

After terminating your program you must re-enroll your child or children in a public or private school if they are of compulsory school age.
