Maria DeMaio has taught in Duval County
for four years. Maria provides mentoring experiences for
education students and interns in her classroom. Her
last intern is now a kindergarten teacher at North
Shore. Maria believes that communication is vital to the
education of her students. She makes contact with her
students’ families often via telephone, e-mail, weekly
newsletters and notes. She often maintains contact with
her students and their families long after they leave
her classroom.
“Each year I reflect on techniques that
worked well and techniques that need revision. I adjust
my teaching style as necessary in order to meet the
needs of our children. The greatest satisfaction comes
when a child enters kindergarten with limited background
knowledge and leaves reading, writing, adding,
subtracting and confident to try new tasks without fear
of failure.”
~Maria DeMaio
“I knew that Ms. DeMaio was a smart
teacher when my son Miles came home after challenging
her ‘authority on shapes.’ He told her that her sphere
looked more like a circle to him. Ms. DeMaio shared this
funny story with me not with an authoritarian attitude,
but rather as a ‘thoughtful’ comment from a student who
was thinking about her lesson and expressing his own
point of view.”
