Preparing the children for Middle School.

  1. We are departmentalized so the children learn to model appropriate behavior of changing classes, as is done in Middle School.

  2. Responsibility of remembering needed materials and completing assignments is stressed.

  3. We work closely with the Middle School Language Arts, Math, and Science teachers.

  4. We have major projects to teach many concepts as well as time management.

What we Expect in the 5th Grade

Homework:

We believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school.  We will be giving homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, extending and generalizing concepts, teaching responsibility, and helping students develop positive study habits. We expect your child to work on his/her own, asking for help only after  he/she has given it his/her best effort.  We expect homework to be neat, NOT SLOPPY!

Homework is due as soon as your child arrives in class.  Homework grades are averaged with the appropriate subject area each grading period. Students who miss a homework assignment due to an illness or extenuating circumstances (provided that a note accompanies the child explaining the situation) will be allowed 3 days to make up the assignment WITHOUT PENALTY. However, it is the student's responsibility to request class work/homework assignments missed in all of his/her classes.

We request that all parents make homework a TOP PRIORITY at home, provide the necessary supplies and quiet environment, set a daily homework time, provide praise and support, help their child(ren) with the homework process if necessary, but in no case do the homework for their child!  Please contact any of us (381-3955) if a problem arises that you can not handle.

Please make certain that you sit down with your student and go over the homework policy.  Both of you will need to sign the attached form to confirm that you have read and discussed the homework policy.  Please sign and return!!! ASAP.

HOMEWORK AGENDA NOTEBOOK:

We will assign homework Monday through Thursday nights. Homework should take no more than one hour and a half (total time for all 3 classes) to complete each night, not including studying for tests and long range projects.  Your child will be responsible for listing homework assignments, dates of quizzes, dates of major tests, and projects. All class assignments, projects, major tests, and homework assignments are written on the board each day, in each class. Therefore, we strongly urge that you purchase your Stockton Agenda Book" (an assignment planner) to copy and record what is expected in each class on a daily basis.

HOMEWORK SURVIVAL BOX:  It is also a good idea to have a "Homework Survival box on hand.  A "Homework Survival" box contains supplies that your child might need to complete his/her homework.  (For example: Sharpened pencils with erasers, erasable ballpoint pens, crayons or markers, highlighter, tape, stapler or paper clips, scissors, ruler, notebook paper, and a folder.)  This eliminates the time required to "hunt" for the items and allows your child to begin without excuses.

PROGRESS REPORTS:  On the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, you will receive a report with your child's current average for each subject area.  You will not receive work samples on the second Tuesday.  Please sign the progress report slip and return it by Friday of the same week.

CLASSWORK:  On the last Tuesday of each month you will receive a sample of your child's work.  (We will also be keeping a portfolio of your child's work at school.  You are welcome to come to school and view it at any time.)  The papers that are sent home may remain at home.  Also included will be notification of you child's current citizenship/conduct grade for that period of time.  Please go over the papers with your child.  We ask that you sign the form attached inside the their citizenship folder so that we will know that you have received the work samples.  Please return the signed folder the next day.  This folder is our way of communicating with you so that you will be informed of your child's progress.  In doing so, you have an idea of both strengths and weaknesses of your child.  In order for this line of communication to be effective, you must stress the importance of receiving your child's folder on the last Tuesday of each month.  In the event that we do not send home folders and progress reports, we always send home a note stating such!  Once again, if in doubt, please feel free to call us!

TESTS:     Students will have spelling tests on Thursdays.  Students will need to study for their tests (in all subject areas) as they will not have access to their textbooks or notes during tests.  In addition, students do not have the option of re-testing for a higher grade.

CONFERENCES:  From time to time it may be necessary to meet concerning your child's progress.  If you feel that a meeting is needed, please let the appropriate teacher(s) know in advance that you would like to come in for a conference.  We will make every effort to meet with you at your convenience, but we too have obligations to meet from time to time.  (This includes both before and after school.)  The best time to meet with all three teachers for a conference would be during the following time slots:

     Mornings:             8:05 A.M. - 8:25 A.M.

     Afternoons:           3:05 P.M. - 3:30 P.M.

Conferences may be set up by either writing a note or calling school (381-3955) a day in advance for a confirmation of time.  In the event that a conference date must be broken, we would greatly appreciate either a call or a note.

FIELD TRIPS:  Fifth grade students will take several field trips this school year.  These trips are scheduled for academic reasons.  Therefore, we feel that it is extremely important that ALL students attend.  Students will have an academic component to complete while on the trip or when they return to school.  Students who choose NOT to attend will still be responsible for a written academic assignment.  In addition, there will always be a deadline for turning in your permission slip.  Please note that we can not accept verbal permission over the phone in place of a written permission slip.  There will also be a deadline for turning in money.  If a problem should arise in relation to money, it is imperative that you let your child's homeroom teacher know immediately!  In doing so, we can try to work with you so that your chiuld will be able to participate in the experience that the field will provide.

FIFTH GRADE WEEK:  Generally during the final week of school, special activities are planned (by a committee of parents) for the students.  Students have enjoyed activities such as games, a picnic, banana split part, a dance, and cook-out field trips.  Students may be asked to donate food items and/or make a small monetary contribution toward the activities planned during their fifth grade year.  Should money be left in the fifth grade field trip account, it will be applied to fifth grade week activities, for the enjoyment of all.

TOYS:  Toys are to be left at home!!  Any play equipment needed for classroom activities will be supplied by the school.  All toys and other items which cause a disturbance (sports cards, game boys, cars, dolls, yo-yo's, hairbrushes, cosmetics, hats, beanie babies, key chains, etc) will be collected by the teacher and returned only to the parent or the student provided that there is a written request from the parent!

We are looking forward to meeting each of you at Open House.  We sincerely hope that each of you will make a special effort to be here that night.  Even though individual conference can not be held at that time, it will give you a chance to see our classroom and get the feel of what we do each day.

We are looking forward to a really terrific year!  There is a lot to do it can be done much easier with your support and help at home.  In fact, without your help our efforts are practically futile.  Therefore, we would like to thank you in advance for all that you will do this year, not only for your child, but for our school as well.  Together we will have a wonderful successful year!
