SAFETY NET PLAN
John N.C. Stockton
Elementary
Extended learning opportunities /
safety nets are offered through:
Safety Nets (Include in-school,
before, and after school safety nets):
- Guided reading, writing, and math sessions
- One on One conferencing in all subject areas
- DRA 2 - is an assessment used to help teachers
drive their instruction and differentiate material for students. It can help teachers determine a
student’s instructional reading level as well as help to document
students’ growth as a reader after instruction with quality literature.
- Progress Monitoring Plans – every child that is a Level
1 or Level 2 in reading or math on as determined by the FCAT will receive
a PMP. The PMP lists strategies
that are offered for remediation in the deficit areas. Every child receiving a PMP will have a
conference scheduled with the parents/guardians to discuss the PMP.
- Soar to Success - is an intervention program published by Houghton-Mifflin. The program is designed to help students with
the five building blocks of reading: comprehension, phonics, phonemic
awareness, vocabulary and fluency.
It is a supplemental program in which the teacher works with a
small group of students for 30-40 minutes a day. Teachers use the nonfiction and fiction
quality literature to help struggling readers. According to research, when teachers use
this program with fidelity their students make gains.
- AIDE Data – data is produced and reviewed quarterly from the
AIDE data set. This information
helps to determine those students that are below, on, and above grade
level. Discussion then centers around differentiated instruction and progression of
students from one quarter to the next.
- Class Plans – after reviewing the AIDE Data class plans are
developed to address the needs of students performing at, on, or below
grade level. Every quarter the
plans are assessed for student achievement.
- Grade Level Tutoring – tutoring is offered before and after school by
various teachers at each grade level.
- Target Team – team is comprised of the principal, assistant principal,
academic instructional coach, ESE specialist, guidance counselor, and
school psychologist who meet to discuss the needs of struggling students
- Wilson Reading System – the Wilson Reading System is used with
struggling readers in grades K-3.
It is a research based reading / writing program used for teaching
decoding and encoding (spelling) beginning with phoneme segmentation. It utilizes verbal, visual, and tactile
modalities.
- Friendship Group – the principal and assistant principal refer students
to the guidance counselor for possible participation in “Friendship
Group.” The guidance counselor
meets with these students (whom are struggling academically, behaviorally,
and emotionally) to work through concerns as well as introduces strategies
to help students work through issues positively and productively.
- Summer Reading Program – Duval County provides a
district summer reading program for all third through fifth grade students
who did not score a Level 2 or higher on the FCAT Reading test. First and second grade students who
scored within the intensive range on DIBELS assessments also received
extensive reading instruction through Summer Reading School.
- Bottom Quartile Safety Net Program – students identified as “bottom
quartile” in reading and math will receive small group / individual
instruction on an as need basis.
Students are identified during grade level resource day training.
