Our Theme Is:

Back to Basics

Reading, Writing, Phonics, and Math

Based upon the core concepts (basic skills) taught, the First Grade curriculum provides the basis for future learning.

Reading

First Grade reading is based on a combination of whole language, phonics, and the related skills of writing, language usage, and spelling. Phonics is also supplemented with additional curriculum.

Writing

Through weekly story writing and daily oral language skills, the children learn to express themselves using the written word. Stories are often linked to the reading selection of the week. The weekly spelling test also incorporates the story vocabulary.

Mathematics

Our mathematics program uses the Silver Burdett Ginn Curriculum which incorporates numerous hands-on learning experiences using manipulatives. This program is enhanced with Math Super Stars for thinking skills.  There is also a weekly timed test for mastery of basic addition and subtraction facts.
