GUIDANCE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED HERE AT JOHN STOCKTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO HELP STUDENTS OVERCOME BARRIERS TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
WE HAVE A GUIDANCE COUNSELOR AVAILABLE TO HELP ALL STUDENTS DEVELOP THEIR STRENGTHS THROUGH ACADEMIC SKILLS, PERSONAL/SOCIAL SKILLS, CAREER EXPLORATION,
AND DEVELOPMENTAL SKILLS.
THIS IS DONE NOT ONLY THROUGH DIRECT SERVICES TO STUDENTS, BUT ALSO THROUGH CONSULTATION WITH TEACHERS, PARENTS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS.
COUNSELOR PROVIDED SERVICES:
- INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, WHICH ESTABLISHES A CONFIDENTIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE
STUDENT IN ORDER TO DEVELOP TRUST. THIS TRUST PROVIDES AN ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH THE STUDENT CAN FOCUS ON PROBLEM-SOLVING, DECISION-MAKING, AND ACADEMIC
SKILL BUILDING.
- CONSULTATION, WHICH ASSISTS THE ADULTS IN A STUDENT’S LIFE TO DEVELOP SKILLS THAT
WILL HELP THEM WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH THE STUDENT. THE COUNSELOR CONFERS WITH PARENTS,
TEACHERS, AND OTHER SCHOOL STAFF, DISTRICT-LEVEL PERSONNEL, AND/OR COMMUNITY AGENCIES TO FACILITATE THE BEST POSSIBLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS.
- COORDINATION FROM REFERRAL THROUGH PLACEMENT OF THE THE EXCEPTIONAL
STUDENT.
- SMALL GROUP COUNSELING
THE COUNSELOR WORKS WITH TWO OR MORE STUDENTS AT THE SAME TIME. GROUP DISCUSSIONS MAY BE UNSTRUCTURED OR BASED ON SPECIFIC LEARNING ACTIVITIES. STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM EACH OTHER, SHARE IDEAS, INCREASE AWARENESS OF OTHERS, SEE HOW THEY ARE PERCEIVED BY OTHERS, GAIN KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICE SKILLS, AND THINK ABOUT THEIR GOALS AND ACTIONS.
- CLASSROOM GUIDANCE
COUNSELOR PRESENTATION IN CLASSROOMS OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE DEVELOPMENTAL GUIDANCE ACTIVITIES TO THE LARGEST NUMBER OF STUDENTS. LARGE GROUP WORK IS BASED ON AND INVOLVES PRESENTATION OF SKILL-BUILDING STRATEGIES AND DISCUSSIONS AMONG STUDENTS.
- EACH FORM OF INTERACTION WITH THE STUDENTS MAY ALSO COVER SUCH TOPICS AS PEER RELATIONSHIPS, IMPULSE CONTROL, STUDY HABITS, CONFIDENCE BUILDING, FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS, GOAL SETTING, CAREER
EXPLORATION, DECISION-MAKING, MULTI-CULTURAL AWARENESS, AND OTHERS.
IS TO PRODUCE STUDENTS WHO WILL, UPON LEAVING STOCKTON,
POSSESS THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND PERSONAL HABITS TO HELP THEM BE
PRODUCTIVE WORKERS IN A GLOBAL ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT, AS WELL AS CONTRIBUTING
CITIZENS IN SOCIETY.
