Guided reading…is an instructional teaching approach for small groups of students who have similar learning needs AND who are at a similar developmental stage of reading.

Guided reading…helps students learn how to process a variety of challenging texts with understanding and fluency.

Guided reading… helps students learn and practice effective strategies for processing text with understanding.

In guided reading, the teacher works with small groups of students (no more than 6) who are at the same instructional level (90-94% accuracy) or have the same instructional needs. Typically, a group of students meet with the teacher for a guided reading lesson about three times a week.  “AT RISK” students should meet with the teacher every day for shorter periods of time. During a guided reading session, the teacher helps students talk, think, and read their way through a text.

The purpose of guided reading is to develop independent readers who question, consider alternatives, and make informed choices as they seek meaning.
