Academic Teaming

Academic Teaming is where several teachers work together to reflect, plan, implement a curriculum for a common cohort of students. Oftentimes, these teams are made up of the four core subject areas:  math, language arts, science, and social studies.

* Co-Teaching

  Co-teaching, or team teaching, refers to two or more teachers simultaneously providing instruction to students in the same classroom.  Sometimes members of an academic team may participate in team teaching.

* ESOL

Every teacher in the state of Florida is bound by the requirements of the Consent Decree and State Statue when an ESOL (English Speaker of other Language) is placed in the teacher’s classroom. Classes are available through the District Professional Development Office:  348-7487

  • All elementary and language arts teachers (middle and high school) are required to complete five ESOL workshops worth a total of 300 points within five years after getting “flagged” for having an ESOL student in their classroom.  These 300 points will qualify the teacher for an ESOL endorsement that can be added on to his/her certificate.

All other subject area teachers (middle and high) and administration are required to have 60 points (one class) in order to obtain an ESOL endorsement for their certificate.

* Required Classroom Artifacts

Creating a safe and inviting learning environment within your classroom is extremely important.  Decorating your classroom is nice, but it is more important that your classroom be functional and reflect a standards-based classroom.  Every subject area, regardless of grade level, is based on standards, content and performance.  Your classroom should reflect the standards being taught in your class.  Your bulletin boards should display:

  • Assignment/Task
  • Standard
  • Rubric
  • Student Work
  • Teacher Commentary

In addition, other artifacts should be prominently posted for your students and visitors to see.  These artifacts include (but not limited to):

  • Rituals and Routines for Classroom Activities
  • Class Library
  • Daily Agenda (using workshop model)
  • Class Rules/Discipline Policy
  • Word Wall
  • Student Portfolios (folders containing student work that reflect the standards)
  • 25 Book Campaign
  • Author’s Chair

For a description of these artifacts click here.
