What to Teach

After you receive notification that you are hired and have registered for the teacher orientation, you need to gather your teaching materials and become familiar with the content.  Depending on the time you are hired, you may have other teachers and coaches to assist you or you may get your materials from administrative staff during the summer.  Either way, you want to:

Step 1
Find out what subject(s) you will be teaching.  Ask if you are part of a team or if you are co-teaching.

Step 2
Gather your teaching materials, this may include teacher manuals, curriculum guides, student books, and other ancillary materials.

Step 3
You may have an opportunity to see where your classroom will be or find out if you will be a traveling teacher.  This will give you an idea of how you want to set your classroom (or traveling cart) up for your students.

Step 4
Find out about any funds or supplies you have.  These supplies may include a laptop computer, lesson plan book, attendance book, classroom supplies, classroom funds.

Before you spend money for your class, make sure you know whether or not you will be reimbursed.  Don't assume that all purchases are automatically covered.

Step 5
Get contact information to see who your resources are at the district level.  Remember, depending on the time of year resources may be limited, especially during the summer and winter breaks.

Step 6
Check online for curriculum resources using the links on the left panel.
