Sunshine Math is an enhancement program for grades K-8 and provides an extra challenge for self-motivated students in mathematics. Participation is optional. The program runs for approximately 25 weeks. A weekly activity sheet is worked on by the students independently. Parents may read the problems aloud if needed but should let their children complete the problem solving process on their own. The objective of the program is to expand a student’s interest in independent thinking, teach responsibility, and develop critical thinking skills. The program is not meant to replace any aspect of school curriculum.
Participating students should complete and turn in one worksheet each week. The worksheets are graded and the scores are used to determine participants in the TLAE final exam. Five students from grade levels first through fifth will be asked to participate in the TLAE final exam to determine the five grade level representatives for TLAE at the DCPS Sunshine Math Competition. Kindergarten has 10 worksheets and will begin in January. Kindergarten does not participate in the TLAE or DCPS competitions.
Worksheets completed over school holidays will not be considered late. All worksheets must be received by March 12, 2012. Any worksheets turned in after this point will not be added to the students final scores.
General program information can also be found on the DCPS website.
