Safety Nets

Safety Nets are programs to make sure every child has a better opportunity for promotion.  Providing effective interventions for struggling readers is highly important to their future academic success.  At Carter G. Woodson we have the following Safety Nets in place:

Soar to Success-Soar to Success was developed to help students learn to apply and use the comprehension and decoding strategies and skills of an effective reader, as they read across the curriculum.

Extra Support Handbook- Extra Support Handbook is used daily to build around a preteach and reteach model.

FLKRS-FLKRS are given only to Kindergarten students to determine student readiness to engage in literacy instruction.

After School Tutoring-After School Tutoring is offered to those students that need that extra time to understand a concept.  Two days a week students are tutored in Mathematics and two days a week students are tutored in Reading.

Fast ForWord-The Fast ForWord Program is initially offered each school year to third, fourth, and fifth grade students.  After January, primary students have the opportunity to work in the Fast ForWord Lab.

Dibels-Dibels stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills.  These skills consist of the following components: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.  All Level 1 and 2 fourth and fifth grade students are tested on Reading Fluency.

FCAT Test Maker-All third, fourth and fifth grade teachers have access to this program for use with their students.

Triple ii/Double ii-Triple stands for Immediate Intensive Interventions.  Without these interventions many of our children who arrive at school deficient in cognitive and basic language skills will lag too far behind their peers.  Double ii stands for Initial Instruction.  This is the first line of defense against reading difficulties.

FCAT Simulation-The FCAT Simulation software for the FCAT has been installed for third grade Reading and Math and fifth grade Science.

Riverdeep Learning Village-Riverdeep Learning Village is a software suite named Destination for Success in the areas of Reading and Math.  Every classroom has access to this site.

FCAT Explorer-FCAT Explorer is a web site that every third, fourth, and fifth grade student has access to on the internet.

DRA's-DRA's identify students who may be working below the level of proficiency and need further assistance in moving forward.  DRA's confirm or redirect ongoing instruction as well as group students effectively for Reading experiences and instruction.
