It is important to show your child how mathematics is used in everyday life. Pose different situations to your child using math for them to solve…”If 7 more people come over for dinner, how many more plates will we need?”, “This package of chicken contains 3 pork chops, how many packages would we need if we were cooking 18 pork chops?” Ask them to solve the problem a different way and explain how it is different. Using, solving and talking about mathematics can be fun! Help your child see that math is everywhere. Students are focusing on the following concepts and skills.
Grade | Student focus: |
---|---|
K | Start work on modeling addition using objects including cubes, coins and fingers. |
1 | Demonstrate understanding of the Commutative Property of Addition. Add and subtract fluently within 20. Demonstrate understanding of subtraction as an unknown addend. |
2 | Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one-step word problems. Develop strategies for solving story problems with an unknown. Mentally add multiples of 10 to a 2- digit number. |
3 | Solve combinations situations, comparison situations, and rate situations with choice of strategy. |
4 | Use area models and visual representation to solve multiplication problems. Determine the effect on the product when the factor is doubled or halved. |
5 | Practice computation skills in all operations and solve multiplication and division problems with large numbers. Solve problems using the order of operations. |
