Words From Our Staff
Duval County gave me the opportunity to do what I love—to be with my students, to work with my why. Because the students are my why.
Denidza Alvarez-Laboy - Pre-Kindergarten Teacher San Jose Elementary School
I’m a product of Duval County Public Schools. My children are a part of Duval County Public Schools. Without Duval County Public Schools, I wouldn’t be who I am today.
Marcia Pratt - 7th Grade Science Teacher Mattie V. Rutherford Alternative School
Hopefully many of these students will be the leaders of tomorrow. We want them to develop independent learner skills, leadership skills—so we try and infuse that all into the curriculum.
Pam Farrell - 2nd Grade Teacher – Gifted Jacksonville Beach Elementary
It gives me a great honor knowing I'm helping students understand something at first they didn't understand.
Amanda Lusk - 5th Grade Math Teacher Ortega Elementary School
Whether it’s math, engineering, or aeronautics, this district gives me the freedom and support to inspire confidence and change lives. That’s what makes teaching here so meaningful.
Elizabeth Michaels - Algebra, Engineering & Aeronautics Teacher Duncan Fletcher High School
It’s not just academic—it’s about being together and enjoying one another. At Duval County Public Schools, we build community, create safe spaces, and inspire students through every connection we make. That’s what makes being part of Team Duval so powerful.
James Gaspard - Educator Englewood High School
It’s not just about computers—it’s about preparing students for real life. At Duval County Public Schools, I get to plant seeds, nurture them, and watch students grow into confident, capable young people. That’s what makes this work so meaningful.
Nichole Fisher - Information & Communication Technology Teacher Springfield Middle School
At Duval County Public Schools, I get to create moments where every student is celebrated. I love being part of a district that values inclusion, joy, and community. Events like the Andrew Turner Memorial Track Meet remind me why I do this work.
Nicole Critch - ESE Coordinator Mandarin Middle School
At Duval County Public Schools, I get to teach in the heart of the community I love. I see my students at the grocery store, the park, the ice cream shop—and that connection builds trust and joy. I love that our district values relationships and gives me the freedom to help kids learn through play, creativity, and real-world skills.
Sarah Henry - Kindergarten Teacher Ruth N. Upson Elementary
I absolutely love my job! I only want to teach CSS. I specifically came to Bayview because my niece attended here and had the same teachers I now work with. This is a school where we truly stick together. I love being able to understand the students and what they need to learn. At Bayview and in Duval County Public Schools, we strive to create a learning environment for everyone, and most importantly, a safe learning environment.
Jordan Price - 1st-grade teacher at Bayview Elementary
We are shaping the future of tomorrow, and anything I can do to guide, inspire, and instruct students along the way means the world to me. Being part of Duval County Public Schools is incredibly special—this is the best district in the world to me. I’m excited to be back and overjoyed to contribute to such a meaningful and impactful community.
Kelly Singer - 2nd Grade Teacher, Kings Trail Elementary
Working at Duval County Public Schools is rewarding because of the trust from parents, teachers, and principals. They trust me to make the most of the time I have with students. I take that seriously and value every minute we have together. It’s rewarding to see students’ progress, especially when teachers share how students who once struggled to raise their hands are now confidently answering questions.
Meredith Walker - Speech Pathologist
The support I receive is second to none. It’s amazing to have the backing of not only my administration but also the school board and the community. This is a calling, and I love it.
Daniel Flint - U.S. History Teacher, Westside High School
Education is my second career, but once I stepped into the classroom, I fell in love with helping students build hope for their future. As a principal, I now have the privilege of impacting 1,500 students and staff each day. It's hard work, but it's incredibly rewarding to be a 'hope builder' for our students.
Mike Townsend - Principal, Baldwin Middle-Senior High School
I’m here because I want to students learn. I’m here to see what’s happening in the classroom, to observe what the teacher is doing, but most importantly, to look at you—the students. You are at the center of what we do, and every decision we make is about you.
Shalane Peterson - Principal of Dinsmore Elementary
It’s my calling. Every year, I think, ‘This is the best class,’ and then say it again the next. I build strong relationships with my students, families, and peers, helping shape them not just academically but as people—teaching them to handle challenges, step out of their comfort zones, and know it’s okay to fail.
Morgan Jones - 2nd Grade Teacher, San Pablo Elementary School
In the classroom, I was impacting 10 to 20 kids. When I moved into administration, that number grew to 1,500 kids, and now, here at Mount Herman, it’s 150. It’s more intimate, and we truly enjoy learning about our students and supporting their families. It’s a unique opportunity to serve from the heart, making it feel less like a job and more like giving.
Moses E. Williams - Principal, Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center
We have so many resources and so much support for our schools, especially a school like mine. If I need anything, there are so many people I can reach out to who have my back.
Kendall Spurr - 6th Grade Teacher, GRASP Academy
In Duval, more students with exceptionalities are in general education classrooms. It’s about helping them grow in all areas, not just getting the grade. Our school offers so many support services—guidance counselors, donation programs, and more. I wasn’t aware of these resources before coming to Duval County Public Schools. They’re here for teachers, parents, and students—you just have to look for them.
Whitney Watson - 1st & 2nd Grade Teacher, GRASP Academy
This generation needs more guidance and direction. They aren't going to figure it all out on their own. Being a mentor, like a big brother, is something I always look forward to because I’m a big brother myself. Yes, I have responsibilities, but I carry myself in a way that really shows them how to do things the right way.
Jaylen Howard - Senior, Baldwin Middle-Senior High School
We are put into positions where we’re meant to be, and I feel like I belong in the kitchen. I take that and run with it because I love to cook, and I love the joy cooking brings.
Angela Richardson - Kitchen Lead, Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center
I have an incredible opportunity to shape the minds of our future leaders. It gives me great pleasure to work with each and every one of our students, alongside the faculty who help them reach their goals.
Sadie Milliner-Smith - Principal, Mattie V. Rutherford
I didn’t realize the impact I would have when I started here. I didn’t know much about being a Dean, but I knew how to be an educator. I understand the importance of helping our kids stay focused and become productive citizens.
Dewayne Butler - Dean of Students, Mattie V. Rutherford
In today’s world, we need more kindness. Small gestures can mean so much, especially to a child having a bad day. It’s inspiring to see students help one another, showing that there’s still kindness in the world.
Cheryl Hartley - Paraprofessional, Crown Point Elementary
My goal is to create the most positive environment possible at Crown Point. I want our teachers to feel supported, and I make sure parents know we have an open-door policy. It’s important to me that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome.
Brett Hartley - Principal, Crown Point Elementary
My heart is in teaching kids to be successful readers. There’s nothing more important than ensuring that every student has the tools they need to succeed in life.
Bob McCulley - Teacher, Baldwin Middle-Senior High School
We have students from all walks of life. My goal is to ensure that when they graduate, they’re prepared not just to get by, but to become great men who will do great things.
Cody Scott - Security Guard, Baldwin Middle-Senior High School
At Grand Park Educational Center, Marilyn White is more than a teacher—she’s a mentor, motivator, and champion for students getting a second chance. Through support, structure, and one-on-one attention, she helps them turn setbacks into opportunities. Her goal? To see them succeed beyond Grand Park and never look back.
