🌴☀️ Miles' Florida Adventure! ☀️🌴

Miles recently visited EPCOT at Walt Disney World, where he combined fun with learning during his travels across the Sunshine State!

While exploring Living with the Land, Miles discovered how emerging farming methods are helping grow food in innovative ways while reducing environmental impact. He also traveled through time on Spaceship Earth, where he learned about the fascinating history of communication—from ancient storytelling to modern technology.

One of Miles' favorite experiences was watching The American Adventure, where he learned about important moments in our nation's history through the stories of iconic Americans such as Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain. The show highlighted many of the milestones that helped shape the United States into the country we know today.

🚀 Florida Fun Fact: The Challenger spacecraft was a historical shuttle that launched from Florida’s Space Coast in 1986. The finale of the American Adventure show at Epcot honors theChallenger astronauts by featuring a visual of them walking to their spacecraft at the end of the show during the “Golden Dream” segment.

Miles had a fantastic time learning about agriculture, communication, American history, and space exploration—all in one day! What an incredible way to represent Florida on our Mustangs Across America journey! Thank you Dawson K for taking Miles along for some Florida Fun.

Happy Father’s Day to all of our Mustang Dads! 💙🐴

As you enjoy your summer, please take a moment to review these important reminders for the upcoming school year:

🚌 Bus Registration
If your child will be riding a school bus in August, you must complete the bus registration process for each student by July 30. https://dcps.duvalschools.org/o/dcps/page/bus-registration

Families who register after July 30 will need to provide transportation to and from school for the first several weeks of school while routes are finalized.

Please note that requests for a bus stop or drop-off location that is different from the student's registered home address may require additional processing time. We encourage you to register as soon as possible to avoid delays.

⏰ Extended Day Registration - July 13th
Extended Day registration will be opening soon through the district’s Extended Day website. Historically, available spots fill very quickly, so families should be prepared to register as soon as enrollment opens. https://dcps.duvalschools.org/o/dcps/page/2026-2027-extended-day-registration

We also encourage families to have a backup childcare plan in place should Extended Day reach capacity.

🚗 Student Pick-Up Expectations
School dismissal ends at 3:10 PM, and students should be picked up promptly. Regular late pick-ups place a strain on staff and create unnecessary stress for students.

Please understand that repeated late pick-ups may result in district intervention, as schools are required to address situations where students are routinely not picked up in a timely manner.

📚 Summer Saddle Up
Don't forget to review the Summer Saddle Up document that was sent home at the end of the school year. (we have also posted it here on the live feed)This resource outlines the foundational skills your child mastered this year and should continue practicing over the summer.

Just like athletes stay in shape during the off-season, students benefit from keeping their academic skills sharp. A few minutes of practice each day can make a tremendous difference in helping your child return to school confident and ready to grow.

During the first few weeks of school, students will complete assessments on these foundational skills. These assessments will be included as part of their first nine weeks' grades and will help teachers identify strengths and areas needing additional support. Students who continue practicing throughout the summer will have a significant advantage as they begin the new school year.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure every Mustang is ready to hit the ground running in August!

Mave has officially touched down in Myrtle Beach, living her best coastal life and acting like she’s the mayor of the boardwalk. She’s been spotted strutting past the SkyWheel like she owns the place, letting the Atlantic breeze fluff her hair just right, and considering a second career as a professional mini golfer.

Fun fact for the day: Myrtle Beach has 60 miles of sand, which is exactly 59.5 more than Mave needs to feel dramatic. The place was once called New Town, which feels about right because she is treating it like a fresh start. She also tried hushpuppies for the first time and now believes they are a love language. Weather report from your roaming correspondent: warm, breezy, and just humid enough to make every selfie look like it has a soft focus filter.

⭐ Fun Facts About South Carolina:

🌴 South Carolina is known as the Palmetto State because of its famous palmetto trees.
🏖️ Myrtle Beach welcomes millions of visitors each year and is one of the most popular beach destinations on the East Coast.
🐢 South Carolina's beaches are important nesting grounds for sea turtles.
🚩 The state was the 8th state to join the United States in 1788.

Mave reports that the weather is warm, sunny, and perfect for beach adventures. She can't wait to continue her journey as we work toward our goal of visiting all 50 states by October 1st!

📸 Thank you Hunt family for taking Mave along on your adventure! Where will she travel next?

ps. Your Mustang Meadow misses you but is enjoying the guest hydration hero's.

🌎🐴 Miles' Mustangs Across America Adventure with the Vargas Family! 🇺🇸

Miles had an amazing journey across California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas with the Vargas family!

The adventure began with a flight from Jacksonville, Florida to Dallas, Texas, before continuing all the way to Monterey, California. California's Central Coast is known as the "Salad Bowl of America" because so many fruits and vegetables are grown there! Miles saw fields filled with lettuce, strawberries, broccoli, grapes, and many other crops. He also visited the famous beach town of Santa Cruz, where he rode exciting roller coasters on the historic boardwalk right next to the beautiful Pacific Ocean.

Next, Miles traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, a city known for its bright lights and entertainment. From there, he headed to Arizona to visit one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world—the Grand Canyon! The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years and stretches an incredible 277 miles long. It's more than a mile deep in some places! While exploring, Miles even spotted rock formations that looked like a dog and an eagle.

The adventure continued in Seligman, Arizona, a small town that helped inspire Radiator Springs from Disney's Cars! Miles loved seeing the classic Route 66 charm and colorful scenery.

Before heading home, Miles visited the famous Hoover Dam, located right on the border of Arizona and Nevada. This massive dam helps provide water and electricity to millions of people. From the top, Miles enjoyed breathtaking views of the Colorado River and Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.

⭐ Fun Facts About the States Miles Visited:

🌟 Texas is the second-largest state in the U.S. and is known as the Lone Star State.
🥗 California grows more food than any other state and is home to the tallest trees in the world, the giant redwoods.
🎰 Nevada is home to Las Vegas and contains over 300 mountain ranges!
🏜️ Arizona is famous for the Grand Canyon and has some of the most beautiful desert landscapes in the country.

Thank you to the Vargas Family for taking Miles on another incredible adventure! We can't wait to see where Miles travels next as we work toward visiting all 50 states by October 1st! 🗺️✨ #MustangsAcrossAmerica #MilesOnTheMove #CTEMustangs #50StatesChallenge 🐴🇺🇸

Mustangs Across America:
St. Augustine, Florida (The Nation's Oldest City)
St. Augustine, Florida, is most famously known as the "Nation's Oldest City. " Founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, it is the longest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental U.S.

1. Mave at The Castillo de San Marcos (Spanish for “St. Mark’s Castle”) is located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, Florida. The city's crown jewel is a massive 17th-century Spanish stone fortress, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States.

2. Mave at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. While popular culture ties Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León’s 1513 voyage directly to a quest for anti-aging waters, modern historians have proven that his true motivations were wealth, land, and power. These attractions are best described as a "spring" and the surrounding attractive grounds.

3. Mave at The Old City Gates of St. Augustine, Florida, are an iconic historical landmark located at the northern entrance of St. George Street. Originally built out of coquina stone in 1808, these two standing pillars served as a crucial line of defense and were once the only land-based entrance into the walled city. Today, the gates serve as a dramatic, free-to-visit gateway for pedestrians stepping into the historic downtown district.

4. Miles at The First Florida Lighthouse (1824): In 1823, the old Spanish stone watchtower was officially converted into Florida's very first lighthouse, operating until it was eventually lost to shoreline erosion and crashed into the sea in 1878.

Thank you to our very own Mrs. Thompson for allowing Miles and Mave to accompany her and Mr. Thompson visiting our nation's oldest European city. It's fascinating to realize there is so much to learn about in our very own "backyard" the Great State if Florida!

Here are some fun and kid-friendly facts about Florida's statehood:

🌴 Florida became the 27th state in the United States on March 3, 1845.

🌞 Florida is nicknamed the "Sunshine State" because it enjoys warm weather and sunshine most of the year.

Before becoming a state, Florida was ruled by Spain, then briefly by Great Britain, and then Spain again before becoming part of the United States in 1821.

🏛️ Florida's first capital was St. Augustine, which is also the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the United States, founded in 1565.

🗺️ The state capital is now Tallahassee, which became the capital because it was located roughly halfway between Florida's two largest cities at the time—Pensacola and St. Augustine.

🐊 Florida is home to the largest population of alligators in the United States, with an estimated 1.3 million alligators living throughout the state.

🚀 Florida is known as the Space Coast because Kennedy Space Center is located there. Many NASA missions, including launches to the Moon, have taken off from Florida.

🍊 Florida produces more oranges than any other state and is famous for its delicious citrus fruits.

🏖️ Florida has the second-longest coastline in the United States, with over 1,300 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

🎢 Florida is home to some of the world's most famous theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and LEGOLAND Florida.

⛰️ Colorado
Colorado is known as the Centennial State because it became a state in 1876, 100 years after the Declaration of Independence.

Miles has been busy exploring some incredible places across the eastern United States and learning about the people, places, and events that helped shape our nation!

🐴 Pennsylvania – Miles visited beautiful Lancaster County, home to one of the largest Amish communities in America. He enjoyed a traditional buggy ride and learned about Amish farming, family life, and strong community values. In Philadelphia, he visited the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Congressional Hall, Benjamin Franklin's burial site, and even met the famous Phillie Phanatic! Fun Fact: Pennsylvania is known as the "Keystone State" because of its important role in the founding of the United States.

🧙 Massachusetts – In Salem, Miles learned about the famous Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and explored historic landmarks connected to this important chapter of American history. Fun Fact: Massachusetts is home to Plymouth, where the Pilgrims established one of America's earliest colonies in 1620!

🏛️ Washington, D.C. – Miles visited our nation's capital, where the President lives in the White House and Congress meets to make laws for the country. Fun Fact: Washington, D.C. is not a state—it's a special federal district created to serve as the nation's capital!

⚓ Maryland – At Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Miles stood where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the American flag still flying during the War of 1812. Fun Fact: Maryland's state sport is jousting, making it one of the most unique state sports in America!

🏹 Virginia – Miles traveled to Historic Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. He learned about the Powhatan Tribe, Pocahontas, and the ongoing archaeological excavations at James Fort. Fun Fact: Virginia is known as the "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there!

🌟 North Carolina & South Carolina – Miles made a stop at the iconic South of the Border attraction near the North Carolina-South Carolina border before heading to Charleston. At Fort Sumter, he learned about the opening shots of the Civil War and even helped raise a replica flag with 33 stars representing the states at the beginning of the war. Fun Fact: South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union before the Civil War began.

From Amish country to colonial settlements, from our nation's capital to historic battlefields, Miles is discovering that every state has its own unique story to tell. We can't wait to see where his next adventure takes him as he works toward visiting all 50 states! 🇺🇸🗺️✨

Miles sends a special thank you to Ms. Maxwell for taking him on summer vacay with her family.

🇺🇸🌊 Miles Visits Rhode Island! 🌊🇺🇸

Miles may have arrived in the smallest state in America, but Rhode Island is packed with BIG adventures! Known as "The Ocean State," Rhode Island has more than 400 miles of beautiful shoreline, making it a paradise for beach lovers, sailors, and ocean explorers. Even though the state is only about 48 miles long, it is home to over 100 beaches and some of the most famous sailing waters in the world!

While exploring, Miles learned that Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as a place where people could enjoy religious freedom. It was the last of the original 13 colonies to become a state... Miles also discovered that the first circus in America was held in Newport in 1774, and today Newport is known as the Sailing Capital of the World. Along the coast, visitors can spot seals, dolphins, and even whales swimming in the Atlantic Ocean!

Miles also met Rhode Island's state bird, the famous Rhode Island Red Chicken, and learned about the state's favorite shellfish, the quahog clam. From historic cities and sandy beaches to ocean wildlife and sailing ships, Rhode Island proves that great things really do come in small packages. Thank you Ella G for taking Miles along for the ride and for another state checked off the map... ❄️ Mustangs Across America: Alaska Adventure! ❄️🐻

Miles made a very special stop in Alaska, America's largest state—and guess who he met? 🎅 Santa Claus himself. Who knew....he has a vacation home there! Alaska is so big that Texas could fit inside it more than twice! It's home to Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, more than 3 million lakes, thousands of glaciers, and amazing animals like bears, moose, caribou, and bald eagles.

Did you know that in some parts of Alaska the sun stays out almost all day during the summer? ☀️ That's one reason Alaska is such an exciting place to visit! Miles had a blast exploring the Last Frontier, learning about its incredible wildlife, and sharing a photo with Santa. Thanks to our very own Camden W for taking Miles along on the adventure to alaska our 49th state.

Dear Mustang Families,

As we head into summer, we want to encourage our students to continue practicing the foundational skills for their upcoming grade level. Attached to this letter you will find a grade-level flyer outlining the essential skills students should have mastered this school year in order to be successful next year.

These are not “extra” skills — they are the building blocks students will need to access and master the next level of curriculum. Just like athletes continue to practice over the summer to stay sharp, our students benefit from short, consistent practice as well.

When students have downtime this summer, we encourage families to build in a few minutes of practice each day. Flash cards, reading together, math fact games, writing, telling time, and discussing books are simple ways to keep skills fresh and prevent the “summer slide.” Small moments of practice can make a BIG difference in student confidence and success when school begins again.

Please note that students will be assessed on these foundational skills during the first five weeks of school on Fridays, and these assessments will count as part of their class grade. Our goal is not to create stress, but rather to ensure students begin the year feeling prepared, capable, and ready to grow.

In addition to foundational skills practice, we are also sending home the 2026–2027 Sunshine State Young Readers book list for grades k-2. We would LOVE for students to get a jump start on reading this summer and join our schoolwide Sunshine Young Readers Book Club with Mrs. Doyle! Students who begin reading now will have an exciting head start and opportunities to participate in book club activities throughout the school year.

We appreciate your partnership and support in helping our Mustangs continue learning and growing all summer long. Thank you for helping us ensure students return ready to “Saddle Up” for another successful school year!
