School History
James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School was established in 1991 as Duval County’s original college preparatory middle school. Created to serve gifted and academically talented students, the school was designed from the beginning to offer a rigorous academic track that would challenge learners and set a strong foundation for future success. As the district’s first dedicated middle school magnet, JWJ has long stood as a model of excellence and innovation in public education.
Since its founding, the school has remained deeply committed to providing an enriched curriculum that prepares students not only for the demands of high school, but also for long-term academic and career achievement. Through advanced coursework, high expectations, and a culture that values scholarship and leadership, JWJ continues to uphold its mission of cultivating confident, capable, and college-ready learners. Demonstrating this commitment, the school has recently celebrated earning its 25th “A” letter grade since 2001, an achievement that reflects JWJ’s sustained dedication to academic excellence.
In 2016, James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory proudly celebrated 25 years of continuous academic rigor and excellence.
