Academically Talented and Gifted
Springfield offers a Gifted and Academically talented team at every grade level for our students. Students on these teams receive the same core curriculum offerings as our other teams, with a focus on differentiated instruction to meet their individual needs.
Students in our gifted program are challenged daily with accelerated gifted curriculum. Our gifted 7th grade math students are currently working with interactive learning programs. This curriculum prepares them for the rigors of specialized high school programs at our high schools.
Our gifted students (and many of our academically talented students participate in the accelerated math program, which successfully completed, students will have earned high school credits for Algebra I Honors and Geometry Honors. We also offer Biology Honors and Spanish I to our gifted and talented 8th grade students.
Students in our gifted or accelerated program have continuity to the magnet programs at Paxon, Stanton, Darnell-Cookman or the engineering program at Riverside High School if Algebra 1 is successfully completed in middle school.
Students participate in numerous critical thinking projects and competitions. Twice a week, students work in small groups and participate in international critical thinking contests such as Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad and First Lego League Robotics.
