What counts toward renewal for Ed Leadership?

What is the new 20-hour Ed Leadership requirement?

Florida Administrative Code 6A-4.0051 states: As a component of the credit requirements specified under paragraph (1)(a) of this rule, an educator whose application for renewal of a professional certificate in educational leadership under Rule 6A-4.0082, F.A.C., or school principal under Rule 6A-4.0083, F.A.C., with a beginning validity date of July 1, 2025, or later must have earned at least one (1) college credit or twenty (20) inservice points in Florida’s educational leadership standards found in Rule 6A-5.080, F.A.C.

Who is affected?
All educators with certification in Educational Leadership or School Principal 

When does the requirement go into effect?
2025. Educators with a validity period of 2020-2025 and beyond will need to meet the requirement to renew. 

Which courses count toward this requirement?

Courses Open to All Employees

  • Clinical Educator Training, PowerSchool courses 23308 (face to face) and 20937 (Canvas course). This course can only be completed in one of the two offered formats.

  • Advanced Clinical Educator Course, PowerSchool course 24390  

  • Educational Leadership Modules in Canvas (new modules available monthly beginning in November 2024)

    • Now available: Coaching Conversations, PowerSchool section 43384

    • Collaborative Planning Structures, PowerSchool section 43643

    • Community and Family Engagement, PowerSchool section 44512

  • Ed Leadership Book Studies (Please look for announcements in the Weekly Briefing; see past example below)

  • Independent study courses on the Professional Learning Alternative/BEESS Portal. The following courses are approved by DCPS for Ed Leadership credit:

    • Leadership to Support Students with Disabilities formerly Leadership for Inclusion of Students with

      Disabilities (20 points) Also counts toward SWD requirement

    • Supportive Environments for Students with Disabilities formerly Building Inclusive Schools (10 points) Also counts toward SWD requirement

    • Leading Within an MTSS (5 points)

The first Ed Leadership book study on The Power of Student Teams by Michael D. Toth and David A. Sosa took place in winter 2025. Please keep an eye out for future offerings. Discussions will take place asynchronously in Teams and with two live meetings in Teams. Participants will earn 12 Ed Leadership points for completing the book study.
