Program Information

The Florida Department of Education and the Florida Department of Health work in cooperation to coordinate the Florida Health Program for schools as mandated in Florida Statute sections 381.0056, 381.0057, and 402.3026. The School Health Services Program provides services and information in the following: health appraisal, nurse assessment, nutrition assessment, health counseling, referral and follow-up of suspected and confirmed health problem(s), consultation with parent/guardian regarding student health issues, records review, and provision for screenings for vision, hearing, growth and development, and scoliosis. 

Health Appraisal

  • Student health status provided by the student's health care provider upon his/her initial entry into school, and as provided to the school by parent/guardian thereafter

Nurse Assessment

  • Assessment of student health needs related to first aid and emergency care of students

  • Assist students with in-school management of chronic health conditions

  • Assessment of student health needs related to health care provider and parent/guardian requested medication administration during school hours

Nutrition Assessment

  • If warranted, medical documentation provided by parent/guardian for nutrition related health needs with chronic conditions such as diabetes, celiac disease, and cystic fibrosis

Health Counseling/Health Promotion and Disease and Injury Prevention

  • Provide education to students regarding acute health conditions and chronic health conditions, emphasizing prevention and self-care

Preventative Dental Health and Education

  • Provide education to students regarding preventative dental and oral health and establishing good dental hygiene

Referral and Follow-Up of Suspected and Confirmed Health Problems

  • Notify and assist parent/guardian with the referral and follow-up process for abnormal health screenings, emergency health issues such as injuries, and chronic health conditions, if additional resources are needed

  • Assist parent/guardian in locating referral sources for Medicaid eligible, uninsured, and underinsured students

Consultation With Parent/Guardian Regarding Student Health Issues

  • Consult with parent/guardian, health care providers, and school staff both in-person and via phone to conduct care plan meetings based on health care provider instructed medical management of chronic health conditions during the school day

Provisions for Screenings: Vision, Hearing, Growth & Development, Scoliosis

  • Vision screening provided to all kindergarten, first, third, and sixth grade students

  • Hearing screening provided to all kindergarten, first, and sixth grade students

  • Growth and development screening provided to all first, third and sixth grade students

  • Scoliosis screening provided to all 6th grade students

Records Review

  • Student health records are reviewed for initial school entry requirements, immunization status, emergency information, health screenings, and student-specific health related documents

Meeting Emergency Health Needs

  • School nurses and school staff trained in first aid and emergency intervention provide services to students as needed in the event of an emergency at school
