PE Waiver Options

K-8 PE Waiver

In accordance to Florida statute 1003.455 and the DCPS Student Progression Plan, middle school students may request a physical education waiver for one of the following reasons:

  1. Student is enrolled or required to enroll in a remedial course.

  2. The student's parent/legal guardian indicates, in writing, to the school that either:

    • The student enrolls in another course among those offered as options by the school district OR

    • The student is participating in physical activities outside the school day which are equal to or in excess of the mandated requirement (75 hours per semester).

High School HOPE Waiver

In accordance to Florida statute 1003.428 and the DCPS Student Progression Plan, high school students may request a HOPE course waiver after completing one of the following:

  1. Completion of 2 years in Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) classes with a grade of C or better OR

  2. Participation in interscholastic (FHSAA sanctioned) sports at the junior varsity or varsity level.

Waiver Instructions

The HOPE and K-8 PE waiver can be printed from the Focus Parent Portal. Once printed please follow the directions on the form to complete and turn in for approval. These are the steps for the waiver request process:

  1. In the Parent Portal, click the Links tab in the lefthand sidebar menu.

  2. Click the FOCUS button.

  3. Once in FOCUS, click the Forms tab in the lefthand sidebar.

  4. In the drop-menu that opens, click the waiver you wish to print.

  5. Use the Print button just above the waiver to print the form. Disregard the red, green, and blue buttons as they are not used for waiver requests.

  6. Read and sign the printed waiver form. The HOPE waiver requires signatures from multiple people.

  7. Ask your student to deliver the signed waiver request form to school administration (middle schools) or their school counselor (high schools). They will add the form to the student's cumulative folder and send a request to the Health and Physical Education Office for review.
