DA for Change Club Meeting

Dec. 10, 2025 – Gathered inside a classroom at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, about two dozen students discussed everything from stress to calming techniques and mindfulness.

The discussion was part of a regular meeting for the student group “DA for Change.” For club treasurer Camden Fretz, it was an opportunity to learn and serve.

“It’s about growing. It's about learning about your own mental health while helping other students,” said the junior.

DA for Change is one of several Team Duval GROW Clubs — student-led groups centered around emotional and mental wellness. GROW, which stands for “Gain Resilience. Obtain Wellness.,” is a district initiative designed to empower students, promote resources, and remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

“We want to be there to help you,” said club co-president Emily Dorvelus. “We're not trained professionals, but if you need to talk to someone...we are here to do that and to provide that for students.”

For students in Douglas Anderson’s GROW club, meetings often include peer-to-peer discussions and activities centered around topics relevant to mental and emotional health, like stress and mindfulness. Club members are also intentional about reaching students throughout the school. This includes creating and distributing Calming Toolkits with small toys, affirmations, and resource cards to their peers.

Leaders say the club provides a safe space for students to approach difficult topics with each other.

“It helps to have that connection with other students who may or may not be facing the same exact issues as you,” said Fretz.

Above all, students hope GROW Clubs continue to play an important role in bringing mental and emotional health to the forefront across Team Duval.

“I think that the more we push these things out, the more people are going to see the importance of it,” said Dorvelus.
