For today’s black history fact we follow the life of Billie Holiday who, by singing swing and jazz, quickly gained recognition as a member of Harlem’s nightclub scene. Born in 1915 with the name, Eleanor Fagan, her musical career was fostered by the booming jazz scene in Baltimore during this time. Moving to New York in 1929 she eventually began making a name or herself after signing to a record label. With notable achievements like being the first African American woman to perform with an entire orchestra and performing a concert that sold out at Carnegie Hall. Though she passed in the 50’s she left a lasting impact on the entire genre of jazz music.
