Leigh Proctor has worn more than one uniform in a life built around service.
Before becoming a fifth grade teacher at Alimacani Elementary School, Proctor spent about 10 years in the Army Reserve and served as a combat medic. Today, that experience gives her a unique connection to students whose families are part of Jacksonville’s military community.
“We have a very large military population here, and it helps me to connect them,” Proctor said.
Proctor understands that military children can experience long stretches away from a parent, frequent changes and uncertainty. She said schools can provide an important sense of stability and belonging.
“My teacher loves me. My school family loves me. This is what we’re here for,” Proctor said.
Her own career has taken several turns. Proctor began at Alimacani as a University of North Florida intern before being hired by the school. She later worked as a standards coach, district science specialist and teacher at Mayport before eventually returning to Alimacani.
The reason she came back was simple: She missed being with students.
Today, after about 24 years in education, Proctor says she is still energized by the opportunity to help children grow.
