Recruitment flyer featuring Mariette Flahive, a second-grade math teacher at San Jose Elementary, helping students in her classroom. The flyer includes her quote: “I love Duval. This school is amazing. We are just one big Panda family here. We have a great principal, great assistant principals, very supportive for teachers and students alike.” It highlights why to join Team Duval: supportive school leaders, students come first, and hands-on, student-led learning. Duval Delivers and A-rated district logos appear at the bottom.

At San Jose Elementary, second-grade math teacher Mariette Flahive believes some of the most powerful lessons happen when students learn from one another.

Through hands-on activities, peer tutoring and collaborative problem-solving, Flahive creates opportunities for students to build confidence as they work through challenges together. When a student has mastered a skill, they can help guide a classmate toward the answer and deepen their own understanding along the way.

Flahive has spent 16 years in education, including 11 years with Duval County Public Schools. After earlier careers in banking and medical work, she returned to school to pursue the career she had always wanted.

“I love Duval,” Flahive said. “We are just one big Panda family here. We have a great principal, great assistant principals, very supportive for teachers and students alike.”

Her classroom reflects the kind of learning environment she values: one where students come first, educators work together and every child is encouraged to keep growing.

Duval County Public Schools is hiring teachers and support staff ready to make an impact in students’ lives. Walk-in interviews are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the district office, 1701 Prudential Drive in Jacksonville.
