Duval graduate brings hands-on science to Atlantic Coast

Scott Sowell, an AP environmental science teacher at Atlantic Coast High School, helps students connect classroom lessons with real-world careers through hands-on labs.

Now in his 30th year of teaching, the Duval County public schools graduate has also taught future science teachers at Florida State University and Cleveland State University.

“We typically try to do the experience before the explanation,” Sowell said.

Students collect evidence and interpret data before connecting their findings to scientific concepts. Sowell said former students have pursued fields including soil science, water quality and medicine.
