Why I teach Amy Boyter

Amy Boyter’s connection to San Jose Elementary began as a homeroom mom. Over the past 25 years, that connection has grown into a career—and a family tradition.

“I started out as a homeroom mom, then a paraprofessional,” Boyter said. “I didn’t even have any college credits, but a teacher told me, ‘You should be a teacher.’”

She took that encouragement seriously. In her 40s, Boyter began pursuing a future in teaching. Eight years of classes and hard work brought her back to the school where she first discovered how much she loved helping children learn.

For Boyter, the reward comes when those lessons begin to click. Letters become words. Words become stories. And students discover they can read for themselves.

“By the end of the year, my kids are readers—and that changes everything,” she said.

Her influence also reached someone close to home: her daughter.

“She told me, ‘Mommy, when I grow up, I want to be a teacher at San Jose.’ And now she is.”

Today, mother and daughter share a connection to the school that helped shape their futures. For Boyter, the reason to stay is personal.

“This is the perfect place for me.”
